Azan is the spiritual and moral backbone of Nemesava’s society. The twin brother of matriarch Azana certainly is less laid-back than his younger brother Bozan and instead is known for being an ascetic and traditionalist hard-liner among Spiritwaters’ elders. Needless to say that he views the marriage between his sister and Rayan’s unruly Lord Commander Arayon with outspoken antipathy.
There was a time when Azan and his twin sister were like kindred spirits. When he had a thought, she expressed it. When he fell, she cried. But the connection of twins inevitably suffers from one of them choosing a mate. The brother is replaced by a consort. The unique connection is severed by a less familiar and more intimate love.Â
Azan never fully recovered from this shift in his and Azana’s relationship. An arch scholar and spiritual leader of an entire nation had to accept the fact that there were forces his conservative need for order and maintaining the status quo could not control. And it made him even surlier than he had been already by default.
His younger brother Bozan deems this challenging aspect of Azan’s personality a result of interpreting too much into Nemesava’s lore. It is well known that the ancestral owl goddess of House Valalmahar, Azclioth, also had a twin brother named Azwe. Together, they created an entire nation. And Azan deeply believed that this was his and Azana’s fate as well.
After their parents tragical death during the Massacre of Azlyth, it was the sibling’s task to hold their realm together. And they did so with remarkable expertise minding that for Nemesian standards they were still youngsters with their few centuries of age. But time has a way of forcing people to adapt to change more than once. And for Azan, the second major change in his life remains to be an internal struggle…
